Light Requirements
This metallic jewel thrives in bright, filtered light – the kind that casts soft shadows. An east-facing window with morning sun is ideal, or position 2-3 feet back from a south/west window with sheer curtains. The copper leaves need ample light to maintain their signature iridescence, but direct sunlight will cause the delicate variegated portions to scorch. Under proper lighting, each new leaf emerges with breathtaking contrast – metallic copper-green background splashed with luminous golden-yellow variegation.
Water & Soil Needs
Use an exceptionally well-draining mix: 50% orchid bark, 30% perlite, and 20% coco coir. Water only when the top inch of soil feels dry – this cultivar is extremely prone to root rot. Always use room temperature distilled or rainwater to prevent mineral deposits on the leaves. Maintain consistent moisture without sogginess – the cuprea’s thick leaves store water, making it slightly more drought-tolerant than other Alocasias.
Humidity & Temperature
This tropical treasure demands 65-80% humidity to prevent leaf curling. Use a pebble tray with water or a small humidifier nearby. Ideal temperatures range between 70-85°F (21-29°C) during the day, never below 60°F (15°C) at night. Avoid sudden temperature drops which cause stress markings on the leaves. Good air circulation is crucial but protect from strong drafts.
Fertilization Routine
Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to 1/4 strength. Supplement with cal-mag every other watering to support the variegated portions. The aurea variegation means reduced chlorophyll, so over-fertilizing will cause burn. In winter, reduce feeding to every 6-8 weeks unless using grow lights.
