Light Requirements
This rare jewel thrives in partial shade to full sun, with 4-6 hours of filtered sunlight ideal for maintaining its dramatic dark foliage. Morning sun with afternoon shade brings out the richest purple-black coloration while preventing leaf scorch. In hotter climates, provide 30-40% shade during peak afternoon hours to protect the signature metallic sheen of its leaves.
Water & Soil Needs
As a moisture-loving aroid, keep soil consistently wet – this is one of the few plants that can tolerate standing water. Use a rich, organic mix with 50% peat moss, 30% perlite, and 20% compost. Water daily in summer, ensuring the pot never dries out completely. The ‘Bastet Queen’ performs exceptionally well as a marginal pond plant or in water gardens.
Temperature & Humidity
Maintain tropical conditions between 70-90°F (21-32°C) with high humidity (70%+). This cultivar is more cold-sensitive than standard colocasia – protect from temperatures below 60°F (15°C). For container plants, use a humidity tray or room humidifier to prevent leaf edges from browning.
Fertilization Routine
Feed weekly during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10) at half strength. Supplement monthly with chelated iron to enhance the dark leaf pigmentation. Reduce feeding to monthly in winter when growth slows. Organic fish emulsion works particularly well for maintaining leaf shine.
Dormancy Care
In cooler climates, the plant will go dormant when temperatures drop. Cut back yellowing leaves and store tubers in slightly damp peat moss at 55-60°F (13-15°C). Resume watering when new growth appears in spring. Potted specimens can be brought indoors under grow lights to maintain growth year-round.
Special Considerations
The ‘Bastet Queen’ reaches 3-4 feet tall with proper care, making it ideal for containers or bog gardens. Rotate plants weekly for symmetrical growth, and wipe leaves monthly to showcase the metallic veining. While relatively pest-resistant, watch for spider mites in dry conditions and treat promptly with neem oil.
